Rudyard Kipling is known to us as the author of the very famous ‘How To’, ‘The Jungle Book’ and ‘The Damsel in the Dunes’. But, he can also be known as the first ever recipient of the first Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. This award for him changed his career and transformed him from a writer to an actor/actress. Today, you will be amazed to know that he has a number of accolades listed under his belt. Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role: For this, Rudyard became one of the few, if not the only, winner of the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role. The movie in which he played the lead role was ‘arius’. In this film, he acted alongside Denholm Elliott, who won the same Oscar for his performances in ‘Jungle Book’. It was Rudyard’s second Oscar. He shared the honors with Marlon Brando for his work in ‘Godfather’.
1. Best Director:
This was the film that gave him his third Academy Award for Best Director. Though the film failed to win the award itself, the movie did bag him the prize for the best choreographer of all time. No wonder then that this movie is commonly referred to as the Best Dance Movie. The movie, which starred Michael Douglas also did well at the box office. His work here included the remake of ‘Sugar Mountain’ and the award winning ‘Million Dollar Baby’.
2. Best Actor:
This was Rudyard’s fourth Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role. If you have seen his earlier films, you would easily note that this is the role for him that he has been waiting for. His earlier roles had been forgettable but in this movie he was able to garner critical acclaim. His performance saw him winning his second Oscar for his work in ‘Lawrence of Arabia’.
4. Best Screenplay:
This one can safely be labeled as a definite winner. This movie, which went on to become a massive hit was widely acclaimed for its unique blend of humor and romance. Rudyard Brothers Entertainment produced and directed this picture. Co-stars include Joannayang Chung, Ng Hong Soon and Kim Tse. Aptly named after their own mothers, these ladies have brought home the bacon on the big screen.
5. Best Supporting Actor:
Remember how good Al Pacino was in the movies? Well, Chung Hui was supposed to be his replacement but instead she went on to play the mother in ‘Cable Guy’. But that did not stop her from becoming a fan favorite. She later went on to play the role of Mother in the hit Kung Mangarap Ka. In fact, Chung Hui has gone on to play the lead role in three more movies that have been released since her breakthrough role in this movie.
6. Best Director:
This movie, which flopped was directed by none other than Steven Spielberg. Yes, Mr. Spielberg got the job done in record time. He managed to create an epic which was a box office hit right from day one. No doubt that this movie would never have got made if it wasn’t for him. Chung Hui, Mark Lewis and Albert Brooks are the big beneficiaries.
7. Best Picture:
This one might have been a flop but then again, what can you expect from a movie that flopped big at the box office? Deep within the psyche of every true fan is a certain measure of disappointment when a film fails to live up to your expectations. The same thing goes for everyone. Therefore, while everyone will agree that Chung Hui was a flop, the other two movies that were released were absolutely fantastic.
