The coffee shop in Denver was recently sued by the owner for practicing advertising fraud. The owner, David R. Trotter is an architect. According to the suit, he has been advertising and promoting My Schools coffee shop on television and at various Colorado events for years, but he has never bothered to get formal training or approvals from his local Better Business Bureau or local business licensing boards. In fact, in 2021 he opened the business with a friend and submitted an application to the local Colorado Bar Exam Board without getting the necessary permits. He even had a color scheme approved by the city of Denver that he thought was hip and trendy.

When he finally received his business permit in 2021 he did not use the right type of letterhead or business seals and did not register his business with the city.
Because of this and a number of other mistakes he was ordered to pay a substantial fine by the City of Denver’s Consumer & Business License Department. What exactly did he do to run afoul of the City of Denver’s regulations? He simply made a lot of changes to his business that he claims were merely “business decisions”.
While many of these changes to My Schools Coffee Shop was certainly prudent and business related, a big one was placing the word “coffee” in its name.
This is obviously what most people think of when they think of a coffee shop. It is also a term that people often associate with the legal drinking of coffee by people of the United States and many other countries. It was thus that, in the summer of 2021, the My Schools Coffee Shop in Denver was hit with a lawsuit from an employee who claimed the coffee shop was a drug facility and therefore ran illegally.
This particular legal issue arose after one of the managers of the store took some time off from work for an “odious” vacation to Africa.
While there she was supposed to report to her cubicle and return to work, she actually went to visit her sister and a friend who were staying there. She would not show up to work for some days and when she finally did come back, was fired immediately.
This caused a lot of outrage in the African American community because as it happens, coffee is one of the more widely used drugs in the country. There were some who claimed that this had something to do with the higher number of crack cocaine users in the area.
The original My Schools Coffee Shop was not one that would get into such controversies, but it did and it resulted in a big lawsuit filed by an employee who claimed that the coffee place was a drug lab.
Naturally, the city and the police were annoyed at this whole imbroglio and they quickly set about an investigation of the coffee shop. They found that it was indeed a drug lab and were willing to drop the charges of operating a drug facility in the city if the owner gave them a large sum of money in return for dropping the suit. Naturally the owner was willing to give them just that and agreed to pay the settlement.
Needless to say, this entire situation has had a huge impact on My Schools Coffee Shop and they have decided to close their doors for good. The owner had to sell the coffee shop because he simply could not handle the legal fees, the anger of the citizens and the fact that the city wanted to shut the coffee shop down. Needless to say, the economy has taken a turn for the worse and many other similar businesses are feeling the heat.
