The antibiotic levaquin lawsuit is a class action lawsuit filed against Bacterial Vaginosis Inc, one of the manufacturers of the antibiotic levaquin. It was revealed that the main active ingredient in the antibiotic levaquin, amoxicillin, causes birth defects when given to pregnant women and is also known to have fatal defects when exposed to its vapors. The FDA had previously failed to ban the antibiotic levaquin, despite the fact that the deaths of infants exposed to the antibiotic levaquin had been accounted for due to its lethal side effects. When the lawsuit was filed, the manufacturer had admitted to the FDA that the antibiotic levaquin was “implicated in numerous deaths due to its actions”, and yet the FDA only imposed a one-year ban on the antibiotic levaquin. No other antibiotic was found to be implicated in such deaths.

The levofloxacin antibiotics were first introduced in France, where they were used to treat patients with kidney stones, osteoarthritis, menopausal problems, urinary tract infections, as well as infections by Staphylococcus aureus. A clinical trial was conducted in France to assess the safety and toxicity of levofloxacin. This study involved healthy adults as well as people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, colitis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and similar diseases. The study concluded that long-term exposure to levofloxacin could result in “severe, sometimes life-threatening, adverse long-term effects”. Such effects included depression, vomiting, weight loss, decreased eyesight, and kidney failure.

The antibiotic levaquin lawsuit was filed on behalf of all those who suffered long term side effects from this antibiotic.

Levofloxacin is manufactured by several pharmaceutical companies including Merck & Co, Hoffman-La-Roche, AstraZeneca, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, and Cephalon. It was marketed by Merck as an effective treatment for staph infections, particularly in those who are HIV positive, or people with suppressed immune systems. However, it was soon discovered that taking the antibiotic levaquin regularly can cause serious side effects such as depression, kidney failure, and even death. Merck has since stopped selling it for this reason.

The manufacturer of the antibiotic levaquin admitted that the drug was missed in the US because it failed to mention its severe side effects.

In addition, while the Food and Drug Administration approved the antibiotic levaquin for use in treating conditions such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, and genital herpes, the agency itself was unaware of any connection between the drug and AIDS. Another problem with this drug is that it is often given to children without the parents’ knowledge or consent. This means that thousands of innocent children are suffering the consequences of a medication that was intended to help them.

Because of these issues, and to protect other victims of Merck’s negligence, the company is currently being sued by more than two dozen individuals claiming to have suffered serious side effects from taking the antibiotic levaquin.

As of the time of this writing, the lawsuits have been ongoing in federal court in Florida, and are currently being contested in the trial courts. Some of the cases are currently being contested on appeal, while others will be settled out of court. If you, or anyone you know has been affected by this harmful and deadly antibiotic, you should take action immediately by contacting a personal injury attorney who has had experience with Merck antibiotic lawsuits.

Merck was one of the major pharmaceutical companies that developed the antibiotic levaquin.

Since its development, however, it has come under fire for its fatal side effects. Recently, the company was fined $1.35 million for failing to properly warn its patients about the potential for severe side effects from taking the antibiotic. A recent study by the FDA even concluded that the antibiotic was potentially unsafe for over 75% of its users. If you, or anyone you know has fallen ill due to this toxic antibiotic, you may be entitled to compensation for your losses, medical bills, pain and suffering, and in some cases loss of enjoyment of life.
